Major 2026 Updates to UK Work Visas
- English language raised to B2 β from January 8, 2026, all new Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and HPI applications require B2 proficiency across all four skills
- CoS fee increased to Β£525 β from the previous Β£239; payable by the employer each time a Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned
- Stricter per-pay-period salary compliance β from April 8, 2026, employers must pay the required salary in every pay period, not just on an annual average basis

The Skilled Worker Visa: 70 Points Required
The Skilled Worker visa requires a total of 70 points. Mandatory points (50): job offer from a licensed sponsor (20 pts) + eligible occupation at RQF Level 3 or above (20 pts) + English at B2 level (10 pts). Tradeable points (need 20 from): salary at or above Β£41,700 general threshold (20 pts) | salary Β£30,960βΒ£41,699 (10 pts) | role on the Immigration Salary List (20 pts at reduced threshold of Β£33,400) | PhD relevant to the role (10 pts) | PhD in STEM (20 pts) | new entrant rate (20 pts if applicable).
Health and Care Worker Visa
For doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, the Health and Care Worker visa is a Skilled Worker sub-route with reduced application fees and an exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge (saving over Β£1,000 per year). The employer must be the NHS, an NHS-commissioned service provider, or an adult social care employer registered with the Care Quality Commission. Always verify the employer’s sponsor licence status on the Home Office register before signing a contract.
Global Talent Visa
For internationally recognised leaders in science, engineering, humanities, medicine, digital technology, or arts and culture. No job offer is required β endorsement from a designated Home Office body is needed instead. A new design endorsement pathway was added from April 8, 2026.
