The UK Student visa allows international students to study full-time at a UK institution that holds a Student sponsor licence. This guide has been verified against current UKVI requirements as of March 2026.
Core Requirements
- An unconditional offer of a place on a course at a UK institution licensed as a Student sponsor
- A valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from your institution
- English language proficiency meeting the level specified on your CAS (typically IELTS Academic 6.0β6.5 or equivalent)
- Financial evidence demonstrating you can pay your tuition fees and cover living costs
- A valid passport
Financial Requirements
You must show that you have sufficient funds to cover your first year of tuition fees (or the full cost if the course is under nine months) plus your living costs. Living cost requirements: Β£1,334 per month in London for up to nine months, or Β£1,023 per month outside London. Funds must have been held continuously for 28 days, ending no earlier than 31 days before you apply.
The CAS Number
Your university will assign you a unique 14-character Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number once you have accepted your offer and paid any deposits required. Enter this number on your visa application. Your CAS is valid for six months from the date it is assigned.
Application Process
- Accept your offer and receive your CAS number from the institution
- Apply online through the UKVI website
- Pay the application fee (Β£490 as of 2025 figures; verify current amount on gov.uk) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (Β£776 per year)
- Book and attend a biometric appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in your country
- Await a decision β typically within three weeks for applications outside the UK
Working While Studying
Most Student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during official university vacation periods. Government-sponsored students are restricted to 10 hours per week. Check the conditions on your CAS and your visa vignette to confirm the working conditions applicable to you.
