What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is IRCC’s online management system for three economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Candidates submit profiles into a pool, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and wait for draws in which the highest-scoring candidates receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.
Key 2026 Changes
Five New Category-Based Draw Priorities
- Medical doctors with Canadian work experience β targeting physician shortages nationally
- Researchers with Canadian work experience β supporting academic and innovation sectors
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience β facilitating leadership mobility across industries
- Transport occupations β addressing supply chain pressures including pilots and automotive technicians
- Skilled military recruits β with a confirmed Canadian Armed Forces job offer (NOC 40042, 42102, or 43204)
Increased Work Experience Requirement
For all category-based draws in 2026, the minimum work experience requirement has increased from 6 months to 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in an eligible occupation within the previous three years. This change is expected to temporarily reduce the eligible candidate pool for category draws, potentially leading to lower CRS cutoff scores β creating opportunities for well-qualified candidates who meet the new threshold.
Eligibility: Federal Skilled Worker Program
The FSWP requires at least one year of continuous full-time skilled work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) in the past 10 years, a minimum language score of CLB 7 in all four abilities, and either a Canadian educational credential or a recognised ECA from an approved body. You must score at least 67 out of 100 on the FSWP’s six selection factors: language (28 pts max), education (25 pts max), experience (15 pts max), age (12 pts max), arranged employment (10 pts max), adaptability (10 pts max).
Eligibility: Canadian Experience Class
The CEC requires at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada in the past three years, earned in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation. Language requirements are CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 occupations and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3. There is no minimum education requirement, though education significantly boosts CRS scores.

The single most impactful factor beyond your core human capital is a provincial nomination. Adding 600 CRS points makes an ITA virtually guaranteed in the next general draw.
